Min Han

14, Deanstone Place, Colombo 03

Min Han (or Ming Han) is one of our favorite Chinese restaurants. It's cheap, super tasty and the waiter Wijapayala orders for you.

Colombo has a bazillion Chinese restaurants, with new ones seemingly popping up every week. Sadly though, hardly any of 'em serve truly authentic Chinese cuisine, with most establishments serving up what has now been named "Sri lankanized Chinese". Min Han, hidden away in a small house on Deanstone place, is one of those rare exceptions. If you want to experience truly authentic Chinese cuisine, we can't think of a better place.

Food

DSCF0839

The menu at Min Han is quite extensive and can be a bit overwhelming at first since there are like 10 choices for each type of meat, fish, etc. so you may find yourself a bit confused, but a bit of searching will find you some familiar choices. That being said though, don't be afraid to try out something new from the menu, there's good chance you'll love it. This being the equivalent of a Chinese buth kade (fan guan), you can expect some pretty reasonable prices as well, with small portions ranging from Rs.350 - Rs. 650 and large portions from Rs. 700 - Rs. 1300. Now that may not seem very much different from other places, but it should be noted that unlike others, the small portions at Min Han are enough for 4.
Steamed Dumplings Steamed Dumplings
We ordered the Mixed Fried Rice (Rs. 680 for L), Spicy Pork Belly (Rs. 600 for S), Prawns in sweet sauce (Rs. 650 for S), Modha in soy sauce (Rs. 1280 for L), Sweet potato leaves/Bathala Kola (Rs. 350 for S) and Steamed pork dumplings (Rs. 350 for 10!). First things first, the steamed dumplings at 35 bucks a pop, is an absolute steal. Dammit you can't even buy a samosa for 35 bucks anymore. They were tasty, soft and packed perfectly so as to hold in all the juices until you bite down on it.
Prawns in sweet sauce Prawns in sweet sauce
The mixed fried rice was seasoned well, had a ton of seafood and chicken, and the portion was easily enough for at least 6 people. Another thing we liked was that they had used a Thai Jasmine rice which was slightly sticky and aromatic. Bathala kola isn't something that you find on every menu, but Min Han has got quite a reputation for it, and once we tried it we could see why. Its texture is somewhat like a mix of kangkung and spinach and it tastes kinda' like chicken!
Pork Belly Pork Belly
The Pork belly was cut into thin slices with a few pieces of fat ('coz that's where the flavour is) and prepared like stir fry with shallots, chillies and capsicums. The pork was tender and cooked perfectly to the point where it melted in your mouth, and the dried chilli flakes added just right amount of heat so as to not overpower the other flavours.
Modha Modha
Both the modha and the prawns were batter fried, with the latter being served with a sweet sauce. We made the mistake of ordering a large portion of the modha and ended up taking some of it home. In hindsight we feel we should have gone with the spicy option for the modha, but those of you who aren't huge fans of chilli will love the soy sauce version. The prawns were exceptionally good as well, with the sweet sauce marrying beautifully with the spiciness of the pork belly.

DSCF0816

One more thing, in a time where other establishments don't even offer free water, Min Han has an endless supply of free green tea which goes really well with the food.

Ambience & Service

Min Han isn't the kind of place you go for the ambience. Like we said, it kind of feels like you've entered a bath kade in China. It's mostly just a room with seating for around 40 people, with some very questionable hot pink tablecloths and seat covers. They also have a TV which permenantly switched on to Chinese channels, which also adds to the authentic experience. DSCF0813 Ever heard of one man waiting on 8 tables? Well that's how things work at Min Han. The cooking is done by a Chinese couple from Hubei and waiting is done by one Sri lankan gentleman. He knows the menu like the back of his hand, he speaks English, Sinhalese and Chinese, and he'll even explain the preparation of dishes should you ask him. This guy is so crazy efficient that we think he should be carrying out lectures on hospitality management.

Conclusion

Min Han is a very welcomed change from the “Sri Lankanized” Chinese we’ve all gotten so used to. If you can look past the lack of ambience, Min Han offers one of the most authentic Chinese dining experiences in Colombo. An establishment we would recommend to any food lover without a moment of hesitation.

TIP

Ask Wijaypala (the waiter) what to order, we don't even look at the menu

We love Min Han, Ming Han, whatever you want to call it. This humble Chinese restaurant does really tasty and affordable food and is always a fun night out.

Nestled at the bottom of Deanstone Place it’s little more than a room that serves authentic home-style Chinese food prepared by a couple from Hubei. It's simple tasty food as you wood get in any city in China.

Was here a couple of months ago with a friend who wanted to try authentic Chinese cuisine for the first time, couldn't be more frustrated.
We started off with the classic egg sweet corn soup and eventually found out it was the only exception there would be for the night. The mains, mixed sea food rice and noodle both were a complete disaster, waited too long, was served a bit cold and to top it off, though supposedly named seafood there was nothing but fried egg and veges mixed. We actually rechecked whether we had ordered right…
The sides, Ma Po bean curd and kangkung were again both unimpressive and average respectively.
We decided to go with Min Han since all the first hand experiences we heard about were positive, specifically the food. However it is apparent that it isn't the case anymore. Strongly recommend to reevaluate yourselves and reestablish better.

It's just not the same without Wijepala. Was heartbroken when I went there a little while ago, ordered the usual, only to find that all those dishes had been depreciated in quality. The dumplings have shrunk in size, and they've changed the type of noodles used in the mixed seafood fried noodles. Ugh.

For pure Chinese food this is the place but If u r looking for Sri Lankan Chinese this might jt be the one. The overall food experience was great. One small portions of dish is enough for 4 people. The quantity is great fr the price. Since it is pure Chinese it might not be spicy u can ask fr chillie paste from them. My favorite food over there was fried dumpling. Compared to other Chinese restaurants this one is really cheap. Free green tea as well

The service was awesome one of the most friendly Chinese people I have ever met. The ambiance is a bit dull. U don't get a restaurant vibe. But other than that it's a perfect place. I always go there just for fried dumplings. Definitely visit again soon.

This place has gone to the dogs. New waiter doesn’t know how to get an order right. Prices are now too expensive and quantities are very small. I used to be a regular customer but will never go again. Also the cleanliness is poor because if you have a look at the underside of any of the plates they’re covered in grime.

The prices have increased exponentially where it's almost a thousand per small portion. Lunch for 2 with 1 large portion of egg fried rice and 3 small portions of seafood was Rs. 4,400. Interior was still dingy and Wijayapala was missing (apparently Sunday is his off day😀) but I'll still go back since the food is tasty and I do like a difference

There's a special way to speak to Wijayapala. I didn't even need to 'get friendly' with the dude for him to be totally accommodating and possibly be one of the coolest waiters ever.
Apparently he was mean to one of my friends when they went which I think is hilarious.

You need to befriend Wijayapala. To do this, you must go there once by yourself at lunch time, by noon. Order a beer and ask him for the menu. Tell him you want one of the more authentic sounding dishes, and he will deny you. Then, ask him to suggest something. Go with it in order to establish trust. Once he knows you trust him, he is more likely to let you get adventurous. Over the years, here are the dishes he's allowed me to try: Beef Noodle Soup, Beansprout and Tofu, Hot Garlic Fish Fillet, Pork Belly with Black Fungus, Seafood Fried Noodles and Pork Dumplings. I'm still waiting for the day he let's me order a whole fish with all the sides their Chinese customers order. Fingers crossed!

spent almost 2 hours waiting to get our food but people who came after us got food before us. Wijayapala just ignored us 90% of the time. Looks like the review needs to be updated tbh
