The new Savoy 3D cinema is just...wow. It's huge, the seats aren't falling apart and the screen is HD. That's right, no more trembling, blurry projections. Just a crystal clear, blazingly vibrant,
enormous screen.
Our praise may sound a bit effusive, but honestly, that's the power of a decent cinema. Until now Colombo has been struggling, albeit amiably enough, through poor projections, bad speakers and sticky Fanta-flecked floors. Even Majestic City in all it's expensive, refurbished wonder doesn't compare to the new Savoy; the hierarchy of MC's superlatively named screens (Superior, Ultra, Platinum, Gold) is mystifying - which one's supposed to be the best? Are they all the best? No. The screens at MC are small, the sound is consistently mediocre, and, even where it doesn't seem possible, they still manage to make a mess of bookings.
The new Savoy screen is far superior to anything you get at MC. The images are vivid and the sound has more depth - it seems they've actually invested in some decent speakers. There's real clarity and distinction between the deep booms of explosions and the sharp blasts of a gun, and you finally get that all encompassing cinematic experience.
We caught Dredd 3D a while ago. It's a simple film with a very basic plot, but it's brilliant. The visual effects are stunning, the protagonist is a complete badass and it's just a purely satisfying watch. We don't usually like 3D, but this is one instance where it's being used well, with purpose and restraint - unlike the gimmick 3D filters thrown gratuitously over every other new release these days.
Seriously, it's a great film, screened wonderfully. And if you go to a later showing you'll probably be the only people in the theatre - it's a pretty cool feeling sitting alone in that huge, LED lit hall. Message us if you'd like a ticket.
You can buy tickets online, just make sure you get the right date, cause we didn't.
TIP
They serve beer, though at Rs. 200 a can. Don't get annoyed at the gormless staff, the cinema is worth it.

The newly tweaked Savoy is definitely the best screen around and way superior to the Majestic ones whose sound tends to merge from one theatre to the next.
Only real negative for me was the mankyness of the 3D glasses which the attendant filched out of something that looked like a bin and they were rather smudged and didn't feel too hygienic.
However, even though the 3D glasses weren't as posh as the Dolby branded MC ones, they were superb and the 3D (even though I'm not a fan) was very decent. Once the manky glasses had been cleaned of course.

MC Superior 3D, although its much much smaller, has better seats and has much more legroom that savoy 3d, and also much much cleaner than the sometimes "smelly" savoy.

Carry some tissues and you'd be fine. You can watch two 3D movies for the price of MCs theaters. The screens are way bigger than MC 3D and crispier. Sounds are way better!! Purchasing tickets are are breeze in their dedicated website and you pay only the actual ticket prices. Where else MC seems to get additional revenue from 3rd party sales persons. Only complaint about savoy is its endless EAP advertising and trailers of the hideous EAP movies. Coming into the movie 15min late takes away the problem. Yes and the other problem is that they show these hideous desperate crappy EAP movies at savoy for many weeks…. so we don't see many blockbusters from Savoy in a season.

In the men's wash room, at each urinal photos of half-naked women are displayed! I would like to know whether the reverse is true for ladies wash room. :-)

Having read this, and eager to watch somethings besides an animation in 3D, we drove all the way from Union Place in heavy traffic to watch Taken 3 (in 3D). Only to find on our arrival that it was actually just in 2D - I could have easily watched this movie at Excel (I was right there!!) or at home. It was a criminal waste of my time, money and patience. I really wish they wouldn't advertise a movie as 3D if it isn't!

The theatre's screen is not according to the seat arrangements. The screens should be curve inorder for us to enjoy the movie. Very much dissatisfied because of this. The Savoy cinema must do the said ammendments because now the generation had changed and people would have enjoyed fab experiences in other theatres

I haven't enjoyed the complete essence of the movie because of seats and screen.VERY BAD
