English Cake Company

2A, Sulaiman Terrace, Jawatte Road, Colombo 5

The Cakery used to be a resident favourite amongst the plebs at office, but they've long since dwindled in terms of service and food.

When it comes to freshly baked cakes and sweet goodies in Colombo, The Cakery is a popular option. After starting off as a tiny food stall in Good Market, they've come a long way and now have become a proper cafe with an extended menu. We dropped in for a lunch on a weekday while trying out FriMi's 25% cashback offer.

Food

Aside from the usual cakes, The Cakery serves up a bunch of other cafe food - pasta, waffles, pancakes, sandwiches, and wraps and whatnot. Everything here is either vegetarian or seafood fare and no meats. Plus, it's BYOB (wine and beer only) and it's corkage free.

The Creamy Pesto with Smoked Salmon (Rs. 850) came as a generous helping of penne pasta soaked in homemade pesto sauce and cheese, along with some beautifully pink smoked salmon on top. You can replace the layer of smoked salmon with prawns, and get the parmesan and herbs addon (we did) if you like. In terms of flavor, this one was quite alright. The smoked salmon had that distinct smoky flavor, while the pasta was cooked Al dente and presented a very mild pesto aroma. More cheese and pesto would have certainly made this better.

The Garlic Prawns Sandwich (Rs. 650) on the other hand was much better. With plenty of chili garlic prawn bits to munch on, it was filled with mozzarella, iceberg lettuce and Cakery's homemade bell pepper and tomato sauce. The tangy hits of the sauce sort of overpowered the fresh seafood flavor, but we really didn't mind. The bread was nicely toasted, producing a deliciously crispy exterior.

We ordered a couple of cakes off the display - Chocolate Cheesecake Tart and Raspberry - Passion Fruit Slice.

My lunch partner is a loyal patron of The Cakery, and Raspberry - Passion Fruit (Rs. 280) Loaf was his favorite. Boasting the natural flavors of said fruits, it wasn't sugary, and whatever the sweetness it has, comes from the fruits itself. I didn't hate it, but in terms of texture, I'd have preferred it to be fudgy and spongy, instead of being crumbly.

The Chocolate Cheesecake Tart (Rs. 380) was such a delight. Consisting of two layers - a decadent, crumbly dark chocolate base, a rich chocolate cake-like middle, topped off with a light and fluffy layer of cream cheese, it sits smoothly on the palate. The teeny tiny sourness that comes from the cream cheese layer blended perfectly with the bitterness of the dark chocolate. We recommend this.

Drinks

The Cakery uses an in-house blend of coffee called Thambapanni in their coffee based drinks. Frothy and light, their Cappucino (Rs. 450) had a good caffeine punch emerging through, but the milk itself was a bit of a letdown. It did not have that velvety texture that we hoped for.

Hella refreshing and strong hints of coffee seeping through, the Iced Mocha (Rs. 520) was a good one. The milk was light and adequately cold, but we'd prefer some more chocolate in this.

Service & Ambience

It was a busy Wednesday afternoon, and the cafe was buzzing with customers dropping in for lunch. Our food arrived within around 15 minutes, which is pretty impressive.

The interior hasn't changed a bit. It's the same set of cozy cushion sofas and wooden chairs neatly aligned with tables. They've got plenty of space upstairs, downstairs and in the lounge.

Conclusion

The Cakery is still popular and seems to be doing well with the business. While there's room for improvement, it's a place that you can drop by, sit down and treat yourself with a cuppa, accompanied by a slice of cake/dessert - preferably that delicious chocolate cheesecake tart.

What a sad sight it is to see how poor this place is now compared to years ago. Miserable service - often have to wait while the staff finish chatting amongst themselves before you're served. Coffee is served lukewarm and takes an age to arrive. Lighting inside is very dim - not in a romantic way, more of a 'we can't be bothered updating' kind of way.

The cakes are still fine. Some very good, some mediocre.

Sadly, it seems the owners have done nothing to fix the issues despite having several poor reviews.

Huge plus on ready-made cakes and stuff and ambiance. I love and enjoy both these whenever I'm there.
Food and service on the other hand is an entirely different story. Both aspects cry for revamping so much so that I cannot recommend anyone to eat other than a piece of cake on a paper plate there.

Delicious breakfast bagels, with salmon and poached egg are now my end of the week addiction and I've not found anything to compare with them in Colombo. Dear All at the cakery please don't ever discontinue them, as restaurants seem to have a habit of doing!

We were dissapointed with our visit a month ago. Everything on the breakfast menu was either "old" or " cannot be prepared ". The worst was the toilet upstairs. Pretty sure some serious turds were lurking in a corner. Thank god the kids didn't need to use the toilet.

My kids love the cakes. The slices are quite big and generous and the price seems high as most people are probably comparing to the mass produced cake in the market. But good things don't come cheap. Why? - because it costs more to make them ! The Chocolate fudge cake and the Peanut butter cake are divine !

Love what Panino does to a good old "roast paan". Ha, I picked up the tricks of the trade by watching how they make it. The amount of cheese they put in that thing should be outlawed! Try the pulled BBQ chicken melt sandwich, it is awesome !

By the way we always buy from the good market stalls, and must visit the outlet some day.

Come on YAMU! Only 4 stars!?! Granted, there are a few issues such as the lack of adequate seating. And the staff is not that well trained, but hey are always nice and willing to help - which is a lot more than I can say for most local places. But I'd give these guys 5 stars just for the food!!
I mean, really, have you ever had any cake in Colombo which even comes close to the sheer brilliance of theirs?
And for people who are complaining about the price, do you have any idea how much some of those ingredients cost? These prices are very reasonable, even bordering on cheap. Try buying cheesecake at the Hilton.

I Agree. Panino have the best cakes and sandwiches… and although the price seems a bit high, it is really value for money. However, their service……. well that is something totally different. I've been there on three occasions now, and the service has been the same…… slow to non-existent. On my last visit, I was standing around feeling rather awkwards since no one took my order, and the (Chef/Owner/Manager???) was leaning on the counter chatting with a girl and the others were just standing around staring…… it was after 10 minutes that someone actually approached me to ask if I had been served, and that was by the guy in the picture above. If they could really give a better customer service, then this would be super perfect!!
