The government, it seems, is finally making an effort to make Colombo a green city.
Still the UDA, for all its multi billion rupee budget, doesn’t seem to have achieved as much as this bunch of humble Pettah traders who have turned a patch of pavement off Main Street into a pine forest. With the aid of disused plastic toilet brushes and other synthetic green colored fibres they’ve erected what looks like an American Xmas tree nursery.
You want to offer them money to be allowed to cut them down and walkaway with your own fresh-cut Christmas tree. Except they are all made entirely of plastic. Lovely as this splodge of green in the middle of Pettah is, as Colombo Xmas traditionalists, we cant really recommend you buy one. If you must have a piece of greenery for your, probably already green, home the fir branches sold outside the Town Hall are YAMU’s recommendation.
