Colombo’s got a lot of great home bakers, so we recently set ourselves the tasty task of trying them all out (see Munchkin and Sweet Wishes by Vish).
Sits Cakes and Desserts is one of the classics. Her cakes, puddings, cupcakes, etc. are all excellent and you can expect consistently high quality. Sita does all sorts of elaborate cakes – angry birds themed, smurfs, etc. – and you can ask for something to be made specifically, but if you want something simple her signature chocolate cake is one of the best we’ve had in Colombo (we also like Fab) – it’s a simple cake, just chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate (Rs. 700 per lb). If you’ve got a birthday coming up definitely give her a call. And if you want a personalised message it’ll be done beautifully – she uses red glittery icing, and the lettering comes out slim and neat. We recently bought a birthday cake from Monique, but the writing was quite sloppy and messy, despite the cake being pretty good.
Sita’s desserts are also excellent. We love the passion freeze (Rs. 1750) – this is sort of like a cheesecake, but not quite. Don’t really know what’s in it, but you have a biscuity layer at the bottom, then a thick slab of something that tastes like cheesecake topped with lots and lots of passion fruit, served cold. Her nutty chocolate brownies (Rs. 1250) and red velvet cupcakes (Rs. 160 each) are especially popular. You can tell she uses good ingredients, and that all the cooking is done with care and attention.
Pictured above is one of her desserts, but we’re not sure what it’s called. It’s got meringue, strawberries, chocolate, and biscuit – like a strawberry biscuit pudding? It was good. Everything we’ve had from her so far has been excellent. So if you’ve got a special occasion coming up, give her a call.
