12 Places To Eat Great Sandwiches In Colombo (2021).

Colombo is blessed with many, many irresistible meals, and never disappoints when it comes to two slices of bread tucked in together to hold a flavour-packed filling. Paying homage to World Sandwich Day, here are 12 places in town that are worthy of wearing the bread-encrusted crown.

Home Paan

Easily one of the best home cooks in Colombo, Home Paan focuses on delicious, well-stuffed roast paan sandwiches. Their bread is fresh, while the fillings include a whole bunch of local favourites, such as pol sambol and seeni sambol paired with fried eggs, sausages and cheese.

Department Of Coffee

The newest cafe in the Colombo coffee scene, the Department of Coffee has become an instant favourite of many. They serve up some excellently prepared, innovative sandwiches with a unique flavour palate. Take The Dutch Connection Sandwich for example. Stacked in between some freshly toasted focaccia, this one is a fusion of colonial flavours and elements – Malabar Coast Chicken Strips, Ambul Thiyal Pâté, Roast Tomatoes, Vogelnestje and Arugala.

Kopi Kade

Kopi Kade's range of sandwiches is their take on Jaffle juxtaposed with Croque monsieur, but they also have a Lankan touch to it. Stuffed with beloved Sri Lankan curries, Chillie Béchamel and imported cheese, these toasties might look ordinary at a glance, but will awash your taste buds with flavour. We highly recommend the Mutton Toastie, which has some spicy-packed, robust chunks of mutton in the filling, along with 24-month old Grana Padano.

Baguette French Bakery & Café

A home for handmade, freshly baked loaves and other delights, Baguette brings a taste of France to Colombo. Their sandwiches are packed with high quality cured meats, meats, seafood, cheese and fresh bread, making every bite so rich and flavourful. Our favourites include Le Baguette Club Sandwich and Le Barbecue Sandwich.

Tosakanth’s Roast Paan

One of the very first sandwich bars in Colombo, Tosakanth specialises in roast paan-based sandwiches. From bread to fillings, everything here is freshly done. Their Cajun Chicken & Cranberry Sauce Roast Paan is simply fantastic, while the Ultimate Pol Sambol Roast Paan is a flavour blast made with herbed cream cheese, date & tamarind chutney, and tangy pol sambol.

LeeSH Sandwich Bar

A quaint, little restaurant in Nugegoda, LeeSH has been around for over a decade now. They make very simple sandwiches, such as Egg Mayo Sandwich and Cheese & Tuna Panini etc., but all of them are full of flavour, all thanks to the fresh ingredients they use. Plus, they're absolutely friendly on the wallet too.

Monkeybean Cafe

The Monkeybean is where the Sri-Panini was born. Panini with a local twist is their forte, and we've always liked their Chicken Meatball Panini, which has a rich stuffing made with well-curried up meatballs.

Panino

Panino introduced the art of roast paan paninis to Colombo and continues to do a good job at it. They've got egg, chicken and vegetarian paninis, which you can get for under Rs. 750.

The German Bakery

The German Bakery, AKA The Bread Company, has always been a place known for its sandwiches. From bread to cured meats to sausages, everything they've got here is 100% homemade, and they whip up some killer sandwiches with them. Our go-to dishes here include BBQ Pork Sandwich, Roast Chicken Sandwich and BLT.

Black Cat Cafe

Black Cat Cafe dishes out a few sandwiches, and from what we gathered, they're equally good. The BLT is a classic here, and if you wish to get something chicken-based, go with the Poached Chicken & Herb Sandwich.

Paan Paan

Paan Paan makes great bread which turns into great sandwiches and melts. All of them have fine fillings of chicken and beef, as well as fresh greens, cheese and homemade sauces. In fact, this is one of the options for getting healthy sandwiches.

Subway

Subway, the popular American franchise landed in Sri Lanka a few years back, and has been expanding ever since. As of now, they've got four outlets in Colombo, serving up some tasty, somewhat healthy sandwiches that you can customise as you like.
