The most popular posts on YAMU this week? Malu Paan, Gota and strawberries. An unlikely trio. Yesterday we listened to the Defence Secretary speak on Colombo’s urban development; we learnt that dual citizenship is on its way – and that it includes residency options for foreign nationals. In other news, we spent a lot of time eating malu paan, measuring malu paan and photographing malu paan to give you YAMU’s Malu To Paan Ratio. We also found some strawberries.
- Simply Strawberries – Finally, a dessert joint that isn’t in the Colombo 7 radius. Jagro’s recently opened a little outlet in Polhengoda selling a whole variety of strawberry based sweetness: cheesecake, milkshake, juices and jams. The desserts look great and the strawberries are high quality. This is definitely worth a visit.
- Casadi – Casadi’s been around for a while, and it’s right next door to Buba (who knew?). Serving pretty good – if slightly salty – food at a nice beachfront venue, this may just be the competition Buba needs to up its game. They don’t seem to serve booze, but, well, they might if you ask nicely.
- Brown’s – Onwards and upwards downwards with our hunt for dodgy bars. We recently discovered Brown’s, a tumbledown little bar right behind the Dutch Hospital. Serving excellent bites and affordable booze, this is a great option for anyone considering defecting from an overcrowded, slightly pricy O! Bar. You’ll get served within 2 minutes here, promise.
The Malu To Paan Ratio – Sri Lankans love malu paan, that we know. But of the many malu paans on offer around the city, which one’s the best – and which one has the perfect malu to paan ratio? We chowed, measured and documented our way through ten of Colombo’s finest – gone are your days of digging through hollow carcasses of bread to find those remaining strands of fish. We ranked the buns according to their bread to filling ratio. You’re welcome.
What Gota Said – We went along to a SLASSCOM event to hear what the Defense Secretary had to say about Colombo’s Urban Development Plans. Honestly, he didn’t say that much. But we wrote it all down here.
Dual Citz – The most interesting part of Gota’s talk, IYHO, was his response to the question we asked: dual citizenship, when is it happening? Here’s what he said.
KARAMU
Lots of events this week. The Ashok Ferrey curated art festival Colomboscope spans the weekend, including discussions and dinners with writers, performances. Also check out the Geoffrey Dobbs run Serendip Coast Festival around Galle. He ran the Galle Literary Festival and this event has some interesting stuff. You can see CBK and Ranil discuss on Saturday and Gota gives another talk at the Lighthouse on Monday.
Back in Colombo, FAME the musical starts today at the British School. The lead, Roshani Abbey, is quite talented. Tomorrow, Rozanne Diasz Leanage is hosting a fashion show to support single mothers, it’s called Blooming For A Cause. Also on Friday the American dance troupe Spectrum will be performing at Bishop’s Auditorium.
Finally, on Saturday, the Paapedi group of 25 kids on bikes arrives in Colombo. They’ve cycled all the way from Anuradhapura to raise awareness of zero-emissions transport and you can join at least the last leg into Colombo.
And that’s all for now. Please get in touch if you have any tips, suggestions or feedback.
Have a great week!
